Curator: Here we have a small, unassuming piece by Lyonel Feininger, an "Untitled" work in crayon and pencil. Editor: It's kind of jaunty, isn't it? The figure perched there, all angles and green trousers, like a silent film comedian waiting for his cue. Curator: Absolutely. Feininger's angular style, reminiscent of Cubism, gives the everyday scene a kind of fractured dynamism. It reminds me of Chaplin. Editor: Perhaps it's the hat, but to me, that figure evokes a sense of the working man, forever perched on the edge of things, maybe on the edge of a changing world, symbolized by that bench. Curator: A world Feininger certainly saw transforming, shaped by the rise of industrialism, of mass society, of war. But I think he also found a playfulness within it all. Editor: Well, whatever it is, it's a lovely little glimpse into the artist's vision. Curator: A vision that finds, even in the simplest sketch, a world brimming with untold stories.
