Karl Struss made this gelatin silver print, The Outlook, sometime in the early 20th century. What gets me about this image is the softness and the way he coaxes the light to do the work. The tones are so gentle, it feels like a memory. Everything kind of blends. The fountain in the foreground, with its leaves and statuary, feels like it's rising up to meet that elaborate gate. The figures standing there are just part of the pattern, almost like ghosts. The blacks aren't harsh; they're more like whispers. You can almost smell the damp earth and the water. It reminds me a bit of Edward Steichen's pictorialist photos, that moodiness and focus on atmosphere over sharp detail. It makes you realize that art, whatever form it takes, is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists across time. And maybe that's the real outlook here, seeing how different visions can speak to each other, without ever needing to shout.
