This is a photograph by Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht, called 'Trap in de hal van landhuis De Wildbaan met jachttrofeeën.' It’s difficult to say exactly when it was made, but the image describes a time and place, a hunting lodge, maybe, filled with trophies. I’m interested in what photography can do when an artist is trying to document space, or the feeling of a space, how the artist makes choices that are about a subjective impression of being there. There’s a lot of detail in this hall, from the skins on the floor to the taxidermied animals displayed on the walls. There’s a lot of black here, but it’s contrasted with whites and creams, which gives a tonal depth to the image. I’m drawn to the animal standing on the banister, it feels out of place, alive in a room full of death. Looking at this photograph reminds me of the painter, Neo Rauch, who also uses the strange and uncanny to convey feelings of anxiety and tension. This image feels similarly unsettling.
