'MANIFESTACIÓN' is an abstract painting by the Guatemalan artist Carlos Mérida. Mérida was active during a period of intense political and social change in Latin America, with many countries grappling with issues of identity in the wake of colonialism, and searching for ways to express indigenous culture. As such, Mérida drew inspiration from his indigenous Mayan heritage. Although abstract, this painting alludes to collective action and expression of identity, perhaps relating to public gatherings and political demonstrations. With its striking geometric forms and bold color palette, this painting may reflect the cultural and political landscape, suggesting a society in transition, seeking to affirm its identity through collective action. How do you think Mérida uses abstraction to convey the energy of a crowd? Can you see a group of people when you look at this piece?
