Giuliano Giampiccoli made this print, "Weg langs rivier met figuren en twee antieke zuilen," sometime in the first half of the 18th century. During this period, Venice was a popular destination for wealthy Europeans on their Grand Tour. Giampiccoli's print offers us a glimpse into how Venice and the Veneto region were marketed to travelers. It's not just a geographical place, but a site imbued with historical and cultural weight. We see figures dressed in what we might call "traveler's garb" standing amidst classical ruins, almost like actors on a stage. The scene isn't merely a recording of a landscape; it’s an artful construction meant to evoke a particular kind of experience for both the figures within the scene and, by extension, the viewer. Venice here isn’t just a place, but a carefully curated performance of history, culture, and identity.
