Leo Leuppi made "Blancheur diaphane" with what looks like pencil, or maybe crayon. I like how the shapes are both soft and hard at the same time. It’s like he's feeling around for the right form, the right way to put these things together. I'm drawn to the way the marks feel both controlled and kind of wild. Like in those rectangular forms, where the hatching creates depth, but it also feels really immediate, like he just went at it. The textures make me think of Agnes Martin, but with a little bit of Kurt Schwitters' collage sensibility thrown in. There’s something about the ambiguity of the image that makes it really stick with me. I can't quite figure out what it’s supposed to be, but that’s part of the fun. It's like he is building up a world that only exists in the moment of making, embracing the process, not the product.
