This still life, by Emilius Wilhelmus Dehé, uses hatching and cross-hatching to create a sense of depth and shadow, it's all about process. The artist is figuring out how to represent light and form through this very patient method of mark making. I find myself drawn to the lower right-hand corner, where the curtain hangs. The marks are so dense and repetitive that they almost become abstract. There's something meditative about the way the artist has built up these layers of ink, like a mantra, but it makes the curtain heavy and still. Looking at this piece, I can't help but think about Giorgio Morandi. He was another artist who found endless possibilities in the humble still life. They both remind us that art is not about grand gestures or flashy displays. It's about slowing down, paying attention, and finding beauty in the everyday.
