Daniël Marot made this drawing of a garden house with the Keppel coat of arms in graphite, at an unknown date. You can see the plan and elevation of the house and how it was meant to be decorated with sculpture, and stone vases. The lines are faint but sharp, indicating both the precision of the design and the artist’s skill. Marot’s drawing provides insight into the labor and materials that would have been required to create this luxurious architectural feature, and also gives us a glimpse into the social hierarchy of the time. The Keppel family, for whom the garden house was designed, were part of the Dutch aristocracy, and the building would have served as a status symbol. The drawing, therefore, represents not just the design of a building, but also the social and economic context in which it was created. This drawing, like any design, reflects both aesthetic values and social realities.
