Editor: This untitled print by Brice Marden presents a dark rectangle made up of layered lines, divided into sections. It feels like a portal, or maybe a closed door. What do you see in the symbols and imagery here? Curator: The linear quality evokes a sense of ritualistic mark-making. Think of cave paintings, the earliest attempts to capture and communicate ideas. Do you see a connection with ancient forms of communication? Editor: Yes, there’s a primitive feel to it, despite its geometric structure. Curator: The repeated lines can also be seen as a form of meditation or contemplation. It echoes patterns found in woven textiles or even ancient architectural facades, hinting at enduring human motifs. Editor: That gives me a lot to consider about this artwork. Thank you. Curator: My pleasure. It's about finding what resonates within you, and how symbols bridge time.
