This card by Alevtyna Kakhidze, has been made with felt tip pens. It seems to have been written in response to an utterance, something the artist has heard. The handwriting itself, its thickness, tells a story of conflict, where each word is deliberately etched. The English phrase, ‘She was raised within Russian culture’ is crossed out with a red, angry mark. Then, below, the phrase is written out in Russian. I imagine Alevtyna’s frustration. How she might have felt the need to explain this point, and how the drawing is a kind of truth-telling. It reminds me of the work of other artists who are involved in social commentary. It is very much about the times we live in, isn't it? The card becomes a document and an artwork, and is part of an ongoing conversation.
