This vase with blackthorn blossoms and Chinese stand, was made from porcelain by Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur. What I love about this piece is the way the blossoms seem to emerge from the smooth, white surface of the vase; the soft, almost muted palette of greens and greys gives it a dreamlike quality, like a memory of spring. If you look closely, you can see the subtle variations in tone and the delicate lines that define each petal and leaf. It’s a quiet kind of beauty, where the details whisper rather than shout. There's a wonderful tension between the flatness of the surface decoration and the three-dimensional form. It reminds me a little of some of the work of Ellsworth Kelly, where simple, bold shapes create a powerful visual impact. Of course, this piece is very different in terms of its imagery and technique, but there's a similar sense of clarity and precision. Art is a conversation between old and new, isn't it? A constant dance of inspiration and innovation.
