Vilhelm Lundstrom painted this standing nude, ‘Stående Model’, most likely in oil paint. I imagine Lundstrom, brush in hand, circling around this figure. The colours are moody, blues and yellows, making the figure seem to emerge from the dark. You know, painting is really a process of layering and building, like a sculptor working with clay. The woman’s profile is so intense, her face simplified into planes that catch the light. Her hand, propping up her chin, is rendered with a kind of architectural solidity. I feel a connection here to other painters, like Cezanne, who were also trying to find the structure beneath the surface. Painters are always in conversation with each other, riffing on ideas, pushing them further. It’s all one big, messy, beautiful conversation.
