Ivan Generalic painted "Village," and it feels like a memory, not a snapshot. The painting is smooth, almost slick, which heightens the dream-like feel. Look at how the snow sits on the roofs, like thick icing. I’m drawn to the chicken coop. It’s so precisely rendered, from the ladder leaning against it to the little door for the chickens. The wood grain is meticulously detailed, almost obsessively so, which gives it a kind of folksy charm, don't you think? The chickens themselves seem almost comically placed, like actors on a stage. It reminds me of Henri Rousseau, another artist who wasn’t afraid to embrace a naive style, to paint what he knew and felt without worrying too much about academic conventions. Generalic and Rousseau remind us that art doesn’t always have to be slick or sophisticated. Sometimes, the most powerful art comes from a place of honesty and directness.
