Gunther Gerzso made this painting, Estructuras, using muted browns, reds, and grays to create a kind of architectural landscape. I imagine Gerzso building up the painting's surface, layering shapes and textures to evoke a sense of depth and structure. He’s placing each form deliberately, almost like a mason constructing a wall. Look at the small squares and rectangles nestled within the larger forms; they feel like windows or portals into another dimension. It's as if Gerzso is in conversation with artists like Paul Klee and maybe even some of the early Cubists, but he's doing his own thing, carving out a unique space with his geometric vocabulary. The materiality is so important here; the paint isn’t too thick or thin but has a kind of gritty texture that adds to the overall feeling of substance and weight. Artists are always building on each other's ideas, exchanging visual cues across time and space. Each brushstroke, each decision, is part of this ongoing dialogue. Gerzso's painting invites us to participate in that conversation.
