Auguste Salzmann captured this general view of the Pool of Siloé in Jerusalem using a paper negative. Note the prominence of the pool; in antiquity, water held a deeply symbolic position, signifying purification and renewal. We see this reflected in the Bible, where the Pool of Siloé is not just a water source, but a site of miraculous healing. Consider, then, the ancient Greek concept of catharsis, where water rituals purged emotional impurities. This symbolism extends into the modern era. Think of baptism. The emotional power of water, of cleansing and rebirth, continues to engage us, tapping into subconscious desires for renewal. This image shows us how symbols transcend time, constantly evolving.
