Fork c. 18th century

This fork was made by the Meissen Porcelain Factory, using porcelain and metal. The handle of the fork is made of a very smooth and bright white porcelain, hand-painted with colorful flowers. The top part of the fork is made of gold-plated metal, and the contrast between the gold and the white porcelain is really striking. The porcelain was made by mixing very fine clay with other materials, then firing it at a high temperature. This technique was developed in Europe in the 18th century, and Meissen was one of the first factories to produce it successfully. At the time, porcelain was very expensive, so only the wealthiest people could afford it. This fork, therefore, speaks to a culture of wealth and extreme refinement.
