Editor: Here we have Andrey Remnev's "Caldera" from 2019, rendered in oil paint. I’m immediately struck by the juxtaposition of the realistically painted figure with the more stylized, geometric landscape. What do you make of this compositional choice? Curator: The geometric abstraction surrounding the figure offers an entry point for analysis. Consider the interplay of forms: the hard-edged triangles against the softness of the figure, the repetitive pattern of the stylized birds or houses which create texture and depth within the composition. Does this relationship of hard and soft, real and abstract seem intentional to you? Editor: It definitely feels intentional, like a deliberate contrast. The flatness of the geometric shapes pushes the figure forward, highlighting her realism. What is your impression of how Remnev utilizes color in this work? Curator: Note the limited palette – primarily muted oranges, blues and greys. The restrained use of color directs the viewer's attention. Ask yourself why those blues and oranges are arranged precisely where they are. Is it about leading the eye, establishing a mood? Consider the symbolism of those colors too, though formalism is about form not symbolism. Editor: I see what you mean. The blues certainly draw my eye and create a sense of calm. The subdued colors create a stillness to the piece overall, which has allowed me to appreciate Remnev's style further. Curator: Indeed. Focusing on those formal elements allowed you a deeper look beyond the superficial narrative. Style, technique, color and structure is where a fuller reading often occurs.
