Antonio Donghi made this painting, Donna al caffè, with oil on canvas. The color palette is so muted and controlled, it's like he's painting silence, not a scene. Look at how he applies the paint, thin and smooth, almost like fresco, and there is this really interesting thing when you look at the face. Her face is all soft curves and subtle shading, but then you notice the sharp edges of the table and the geometric precision of the shelf behind her. It's like two different realities colliding. It reminds me of Piero della Francesca and his obsession with geometric forms. Donghi is obviously playing with perception, inviting us to question what is real and what is constructed. I feel like the artist is looking at the subject with real intention, but not trying to force any particular meaning.
