Henry François Farny painted "A Successful Hunt" with oil on board, and it's a process of layering light. The cool blues and grays suggest the crisp air of a winter landscape, but it's the little flicks of warmer tones that really make the piece sing. There's a kind of muted intensity to the palette, which has a kind of emotional equivalent in the scene. I keep getting drawn back to the horse's head; the painter really uses the brushwork to define its form with economical strokes. The texture of the paint isn't too heavy, but you can definitely see the marks and how they work together to describe the animal’s presence. There is a tension between the starkness of the environment and the soft curves of the animals, a conversation between survival and beauty. It makes me think a little of Frederic Remington, an artist who approached a similar subject matter with a more romantic sensibility. Farny's piece feels more grounded, more real in a way, but ultimately, both artists leave us with something to contemplate about how we see and relate to the world around us.
