Jean François de Neufforge created this Baldakijn met Mariabeeld, or canopy with an image of Mary, in the 18th century using etching. The Age of Enlightenment was beginning to challenge the divine right of kings and the authority of the Church. This architectural drawing reflects the evolving role of religion in society. Mary, the mother of Jesus, occupies the central space, yet the classical architectural elements—the columns, the symmetrical layout, and the geometric patterns—emphasize reason and order. Mary is framed by classical design rather than the other way around. The stark lines and detailed rendering evoke a sense of both reverence and detachment. The emotional pull of religious iconography is mediated through the cool, rational lens of architectural design. What does it mean to enshrine faith within the structures of reason? As you consider this drawing, reflect on how societal values shape our most intimate beliefs.
