This photograph of the south side of the Maartenskerk in Doorn, made by an anonymous photographer, invites us into a world of muted tones and quiet observation. It's like the photographer was whispering, "Look closely." The photograph is full of details that I love. I'm drawn to the repetitive pattern of the roof tiles, each one subtly different from the next, like individual brushstrokes in a painting. And then there's the way the light filters through the trees, casting shadows on the brickwork. It's all so carefully considered. I think about how the photographer must have framed the shot, waiting for the right moment to capture the scene. There’s an honesty to this image that reminds me of Eugène Atget's photographs of Paris – a similar attention to detail and a sense of reverence for the everyday. Ultimately, this photograph is a testament to the beauty that can be found in the ordinary if we just take the time to look.
