Cornelis Saftleven created this drawing of two dovecotes using graphite. Dovecotes, or dovecots, are structures intended for the breeding of doves and pigeons. Here, the artist has created the forms with carefully observed lines that bring out their rough texture. The dovecotes are raised on stilts of roughly hewn timbers, and roofed with thatch. Notice how the materials used would have been readily available, and locally sourced. The image suggests both a functional purpose – for example, the keeping of livestock – and the simple means by which this was accomplished. The drawing’s appeal arises from Saftleven’s ability to capture these commonplace buildings with a sense of artless dignity. He is attentive to the hand-made construction, highlighting the relationship between craft and utility. By understanding the materials, making, and social context of this artwork, we gain a deeper understanding of the rich creative tradition of ordinary objects and the ways of life they serve.
