Editor: This is "Sharaku" by Hatsuyama Shigeru, housed at the Harvard Art Museums. It’s quite striking! The geometric shapes and the helmet-like form give it a powerful, almost abstracted, samurai feel. What do you make of it? Curator: It feels like a deconstruction, doesn’t it? As if Shigeru is asking us to consider the essence of Sharaku, the famous ukiyo-e artist, stripping away the representational to find the underlying structure, the fierce energy. Do you feel that energy, even in these fractured forms? Editor: Absolutely! It's less about a literal depiction and more about capturing the *feeling* of Sharaku’s subjects. I hadn’t considered that deconstruction angle. It’s fascinating. Curator: It reminds us that art isn't always about what we see, but what we *feel*, what resonates within us. What a gift from Shigeru!
