G-P. Joumard made "Toujours Chic, Toilettes de Soirées, Hiver 1921-1922: Eudore" sometime in the 1920s using ink and paint on paper, a process of overlaying gesture and detail. I love how the artist’s hand feels so present in the work, especially with the thin black lines which trace the outline of the figure. It's amazing how the line here is so fragile, and yet it manages to capture the essence of the dress's design. It's not about perfection; it's about capturing a fleeting moment, a sense of style in motion. Look at the way the gray block of paint hangs to the side of the skirt, like an afterthought. It has a curious relationship to the more carefully drawn lines that suggest folds in the fabric. It feels as if the artist is drawing attention to the process, not trying to hide it, and in doing so they invite us to appreciate the beauty of the unexpected. Joumard’s approach reminds me of fashion illustrations by Christian Bérard, another artist who blurred the lines between fashion and fine art. Ultimately, this piece embraces the beauty of imperfection, reminding us that art is not about flawless representation, but about the energy of creation itself.
