This fashion plate, *Toujours Chic, Toilettes de Soirées, Hiver 1921-1922: Eudore,* was made by G-P. Joumard using what looks like ink and paint on paper. I can just see Joumard at the drafting table, his hand moving confidently across the page. I imagine him thinking about shape and movement, about how a line can define a form and suggest a feeling. The stark contrast of white against the neutral background creates a sense of depth, almost like a stage set. Look how the lines create the folds of the garment, giving it a life of its own. And the touch of grey adds just the right amount of shadow and volume. It's simple but elegant. I keep wondering, what was Joumard thinking about? Does he see himself in conversation with the art of his time? I like to think all artists are in conversation with one another. It’s about how the work opens a space for contemplation and possibility.
