Carel Frederik Bendorp created this print titled, ‘Dorpsgezicht te Jorwerd’, or ‘Village View of Jorwerd’. The etching depicts daily life in the Dutch countryside, a subject that gained popularity in the 18th century as the merchant class looked to art to define their cultural identity. Look closely. The figures on the periphery tell a story of class and labor. On the left, observe menial workers performing tasks at ground level. Their labor contrasts with the serene scene further along the road, where privileged figures stroll leisurely, their horses pulling carts. Even the trees seem to cast a shadow over the workers, while light illuminates the path of the wealthy. This composition invites reflection on who is seen and who remains in the shadows. Consider how Bendorp uses the village scene to reflect the social hierarchies of his time. It’s a reminder of the complex relationship between the Dutch Golden Age and the labor upon which it was built.
