This is a Briefkaart aan Philip Zilcken, a vintage postcard penned by Jozef Israëls. Imagine Israëls, perhaps in a hurry, quickly dashing off a note, the ink almost dancing across the paper, a spontaneous gesture preserved in time. You can feel the personal touch, the looping letters forming words, addresses, destinations. Look at the way he writes, the swooping of the letters, the way certain strokes are emphasized - it's as though each word is a little drawing. I love how simple communication can be so beautiful. It reminds me that artists are always communicating, whether through paint or pen. It’s a form of connection, reaching out to someone across a distance, across time, and isn't that what we all want, really? To be understood, to touch someone else's life, even fleetingly, with our own.
