Miep de Feijter made this drawing of three children gathering acorns with pen on paper. It's all about the line, isn't it? Fluid, confident strokes define the figures and their world. Look at the basket, it's just lines really, but somehow it's full of acorns, weighty and substantial. The clothes too, a few well-placed strokes conjure up textures and patterns. De Feijter isn’t trying to trick us into seeing reality, but rather showing us how little it takes to create a whole world on paper. It's art as a kind of magic trick. The limited palette keeps everything simple, letting the lines do the talking. There’s a lightness of touch here, a sense of play that reminds me of early drawings by Henri Matisse. Both artists share a love for the simple, elegant line. It’s a reminder that art isn't about perfection, but about the joy of seeing and making.
