Gijsbertus Johannes van Overbeek made this drawing called "Meisje straft haar poppen" with a pen on paper. The monochrome drawing has an unpretentious quality and what comes to my mind is how Overbeek embraces the process of the work. The textures are so simple, but they give the drawing a narrative feel. The thin lines defining the figures are a little bit wobbly. Look at the doll furthest right - the dress seems to billow behind, and there’s a sense of movement, as though it’s just been pushed over. The little girl looks lost in thought about how to punish her dolls. Perhaps the "V" in the top right corner is a note to indicate the image is a panel in a series. Reminds me a little of Aubrey Beardsley who worked around the same time, although this is more playful than Beardsley's decadent style. It is a beautiful little drawing, and I love the sense of the artist having fun.
