Makinti Napanangka made this painting, Kungka Kutjarra, using earthy tones and rhythmic marks. I imagine her hand moving across the canvas, each stroke a meditation, building up the image line by line. What was she thinking as she painted these women? Maybe about their stories, their connections to the land, or their shared experiences? The ochre and white lines create a landscape of texture, a tactile surface that invites touch. I wonder, did she mix her own pigments? The lavender feels like an accent note, a memory. It’s like she’s translating something deeply felt into a visual language. This work reminds me of Agnes Martin's grids, or even the early landscapes of Joan Mitchell, all of us trying to capture something elusive, something beyond words. Ultimately painting is a conversation across time, a shared language of feeling and expression.
