Makinti Napanangka painted this image of Lupulnga Rocksite with acrylic on canvas. It's all yellows, creams, and whites, and painted with a kind of fierce energy. I imagine her there, brush in hand, making one decisive stroke after another, building up these fields of lines. It’s all about gesture. Look how the paint sits on the surface. Thick in some places, thin in others. She layers the lines to create a kind of rhythm, a visual pulse. See how the lines bend and curve, suggesting movement, or maybe the contours of the land. I'm interested in what she was thinking as she painted. Was she remembering a specific place, or was she inventing something new? What does it mean to paint a site? It’s really something how artists communicate across cultures and time. We’re all just trying to figure out how to make sense of the world, one brushstroke at a time. It’s an ongoing conversation, a dialogue between the artist, the painting, and you, the viewer.
