Here's a photograph snapped by a member of the Wachenheimer family in Hamburg during the summer of 1933. The composition is really something, isn’t it? A governess kicks a ball across the yard as two children play in a tub. I can almost feel that warm sun on my skin. Look how the photographer frames the scene, capturing a fleeting moment of everyday life. I wonder what the photographer was thinking when they pressed the shutter? Were they trying to capture a sense of nostalgia, or simply document a day in the life of their family? Maybe they wanted to freeze a perfect memory forever. Photography is like painting, in that it preserves a moment in time. Looking at this image reminds me of how artists are always in conversation with each other across time, inspiring creativity. Every photograph, every painting, it's all a conversation!
