Editor: This untitled print by Eduardo Paolozzi features a geometric clock face. The stark black and white and the intricate line work create a slightly unsettling feeling. What do you see in its construction? Curator: The cube form and the repetition of the square motif are of primary significance. Note how the numerals are integrated into the maze-like structure, almost as if time itself is a construct. Editor: So the emphasis is on the formal elements rather than a symbolic reading of time passing? Curator: Precisely. The material properties of the ink and paper, the artist's mark-making, and the interplay of positive and negative space are of greater importance. Editor: I hadn’t thought of it that way, but it makes sense now. I was too focused on the clock. Curator: Sometimes, the surface is the depth.
