This photograph, Page 79 from a photo book by J.W. Meyster, shows a rubber plantation in Sumatra. It's like, you can almost smell the earthiness in this sepia-toned image, right? The texture of the land and the stumps are captured in so much detail. Look at the way the light hits the cut trunks scattered on the ground, creating a sense of depth. There's a balance in the composition, even though the scene itself depicts something so unbalanced, so disruptive. I keep thinking about someone like Robert Smithson, how he used earth as a medium to explore entropy and the relationship between humans and nature. This photo captures the same ideas, but from such a different angle, it really makes you think about the ways we see the world and what we choose to do with it.
