Curatorial notes
This photographic print of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Co. Ltd. in Singapore, probably made in the late 19th century by G.R. Lambert & Co., presents a captivating study in grayscale. Look at the way the scene unfolds – on the left, the skeletal framework of ships under construction or repair dominates, their dark forms contrasting with the lighter tones of the dockyard. The meticulous detail captures a sense of the industrial process, the human effort involved in maritime construction. On the right, the image shifts focus to the structures on the land, where the interplay of light and shadow describes the forms of buildings amid dense foliage. Notice the grainy texture, a product of the photographic process of the time. This isn’t about smooth surfaces, but the grit and substance of labor. It reminds me a little bit of the urban landscapes of Charles Sheeler, though here, the industrial scene has a more organic, almost overgrown feel. It shows us how art is often about a conversation with the past, remixing and reinterpreting the world around us. And in the end, it’s the questions, not the answers, that keep us engaged.
