Johann Sadeler I created this engraving, *Landscape with the Emblem of the Adoration of the Idol of Isis,* in the late 16th century. The print reflects the cultural and religious tensions of the time, set against the backdrop of the artist’s vision of a European city. In the foreground, we see a scene that critiques the worship of idols, specifically targeting the Egyptian goddess Isis. An ass carries a statue of Isis on its back, while figures around it kneel in adoration. The inscriptions in the lower margin make clear the artist's attitude towards idol worship. Sadeler seems to be asking us to consider the implications of religious devotion and the potential for misplaced faith. He challenges us to consider the emotional power of religious symbols and the ease with which people can be led astray. Through this image, Sadeler not only reflects the religious conflicts of his time, but also invites us to reflect on the nature of belief itself.
