James Bishop made this "Woman's head covering" without a known date, using what appears to be dye on cloth. The all-over pattern is built up from tiny marks, suggesting a labor-intensive process. This echoes how, in my own work, repetition and accumulation create depth. I love the way the color seeps into the fabric, creating a blurred edge around each mark. This reminds me that art is never really about precision, more about the unpredictable dance between intention and material. Note how the central medallion seems to radiate outwards, its concentric circles drawing the eye, while the outer edges dissolve into a hazy fringe. The symmetry is comforting, but the slight imperfections keep things lively. It feels like a visual mantra. Artists like Agnes Martin come to mind here, using repetition to create a space for contemplation. This head covering invites a similar kind of focused looking. It is never resolved, never still.
