This photograph, "Boerderij met een brug over een sloot," was created by Folkert Idzes de Jong sometime between 1877 and 1929. I like to imagine this artist looking through the lens, trying to frame the farm, the bridge, and the ditch. Maybe it took a few tries, shifting his weight, adjusting the camera, until he caught just the right light. Think about the surface, the grainy texture, the way the light catches on the water, creating these blurred, hazy reflections. There is a stillness, a quietude, that permeates the entire scene.
