Editor: Here we have an Untitled watercolor by Adrien Dax, created in 1960. It strikes me as incredibly dynamic. The composition almost vibrates with energy! What elements of its visual structure stand out to you? Curator: The tension between the controlled linearity of the black ink and the fluid, almost uncontrolled, washes of watercolor creates a powerful visual dynamic. Consider how the line, rather than defining form, seems to generate it. It’s as though the drawing is perpetually in the process of becoming. Editor: I see what you mean. The black lines definitely take centre stage. What effect do the colors have? Curator: The colours function as a chromatic counterpoint, disrupting any sense of fixed spatial order. The biomorphic shapes that inhabit this pictorial space lack internal cohesion, instead they create relationships with other formal elements within the plane. What about the spatial organization of the shapes themselves; what principles would you use to examine it? Editor: That’s a good question. I notice that the clusters are spread relatively evenly, and the contrast of dark and light. Curator: Precisely! The placement of these forms are essential to achieving balance in composition. Ultimately the materiality of this artwork is of significant interest to it, considering both its aesthetic values and construction. Editor: It's fascinating how you focused on form, and its material reality. Now I understand the artwork better, thank you! Curator: Indeed. Analysing an artwork through a focus on formal structure enriches how we understand its effect.
