Alessandro Algardi’s “Madonna and Child” is a 17th-century Italian Baroque sculpture. The polychrome wood sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, whose feet rest on a cloud formed by the heads of angels. The work is notable for its realistic detail and emotional intensity, capturing the intimate bond between mother and son. Algardi, a prominent sculptor of his time, was renowned for his mastery of form and expression, making this piece a fine example of his skill. This sculpture is now a part of the Art Institute of Chicago's collection.
