Robert Frank made this photograph, titled "People on bus--en route to Chicago," using a small camera, maybe on a whim, or maybe not. The composition has got this casual, accidental feel, you know? And it’s all in black and white, which for me gives it a timeless quality. Look at the way the light falls on the woman’s pearls or the man's hand – it's not about perfection. It's about capturing a moment. The graininess of the image adds to this raw feeling. It reminds me a little of Walker Evans or even Diane Arbus, that documentary style, but it's softer, more poetic, less confrontational. What I love about this piece, and Frank’s work in general, is the way he sees beauty in the ordinary, and lets it all hang out.
