Editor: So, this artwork is called "Admiral, Spain, from the Naval Flags series (N17)" made between 1886 and 1891. It's a print drawing by Allen & Ginter, the cigarette brand. It's such an intriguing image! It feels so vibrant, yet the man’s portrait has such a stoic expression. What are your initial thoughts on this piece? Curator: Well, aren't these just the cutest little bits of cultural ephemera? They offered an odd glimpse into the way brands like Allen & Ginter presented their worldview. Spain! Flags! Admirals! I mean, is this romanticized imperial history, or just plain old kitsch? It has an almost Ukiyo-e quality with those clean lines. It seems so distant to where we are today, yet these types of references still inform contemporary popular culture in odd ways. Do you think there is any relationship here between the Admiral himself and this beautiful, grand, cartoonish flag? Editor: That’s fascinating; I hadn't thought about the contrast. I guess the Admiral’s seriousness contrasts heavily with the cartoonish quality of the flag, making him look even more dignified by comparison. The Ukiyo-e influence is there, and the caricature really makes it pop. But what was the idea with using the Admiral and a reference to Spain for something like Cigarettes? Curator: I mean, were they attempting to offer you access to "exotic sophistication"? Or perhaps just making it clear the smoker was “manly” and powerful? Did it work? Well, judging by Allen & Ginter’s success, something definitely clicked with consumers! Editor: Thinking about it, you may have a point. I guess ads never truly change; it’s still all about aspirational identity. I’ll definitely look at these old ads a bit differently from now on! Curator: Glad to hear that; me too. Perhaps it is us who provide it with new and interesting dimensions, however!
