This delicate watercolour painting on paper depicts a chair. Its anonymity is intriguing, isn’t it? The pale, almost ghostly quality of the rendering gives it a strangely poignant feel. It’s as if the chair is not so much depicted as remembered. I’m drawn to the way the artist uses subtle washes of colour to define the form, allowing the texture of the paper to show through. There is a fragility to the work that underscores the care and attention that has gone into its making. The artist has clearly delighted in the swirling decorative elements of the chair back, rendering the sinuous lines with real affection. In fact, it reminds me a little of the work of Agnes Martin, who also had a knack for finding the sublime in the everyday.
