John Price made this watercolor drawing of a Sheraton Chair, and I can just imagine him carefully mixing his paints. It is a rendering of a chair that exists in the world. But a painter always adds their personal touch. The artist is so precise and detailed. I can feel John’s breath as he looks at the chair, slowly and carefully recording every detail of the object in front of him. I want to know why he decided to paint a chair. What was it about the object that interested him? It could be the color, the material, the shape, or the use of the chair. The curve of the leg is particularly good and has a real sense of weight in the way he captured it in paint. Every artist is in conversation with artists of the past. Price is in conversation with the chair maker, documenting their beautiful design through painting. Every mark on the page is an opportunity for Price to investigate his relationship to the world.
