Pierre Firens created this print, "Twee putti zittend voor frontons," sometime between 1595 and 1638, using engraving techniques. Two winged putti sit atop elaborately decorated frontons in this scene. The putto on the left holds a palm branch and a laurel wreath, symbols of victory and honor. The putto on the right blows a long trumpet, heralding an announcement. Firens made this print during the Baroque era, a period characterized by grandiosity and emotional intensity. The image evokes ideas of power and triumph through classical allegory. But it also speaks to cultural ideals of youth and innocence. The putti, with their soft, idealized forms, represent purity, yet they are set against a backdrop of imposing architectural elements. This contrast encapsulates the complex themes of the Baroque period. The print invites us to reflect on the ways society projects power and innocence.
