Marc Chagall made this watercolour, *Le magicien de Paris I,* at an unknown date, using watercolour. There’s something so playful in the way Chagall approaches colour. Everything feels loose and dreamy, like colours are just floating around, finding their own way to the surface. Looking at the magician's trousers, you see these juicy, almost Seussian colours – pinks and greens and oranges – blobbed and dashed with what looks like a big brush. It’s a party on his legs! And then, this parade of blue figures in the background, all washed out and kind of ghostly, adds this feeling of memory and imagination. It's so thin, the paint is barely there. The Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame are sketched in with such delicate lines. Chagall’s city is a magical, almost dreamlike place, kinda reminds me of Paul Klee. But ultimately, it's Chagall's unique mix of storytelling and colour that makes you feel like anything is possible. It’s not about getting it right, but about making it feel true, you know?
