This photograph of a group of people on a jetty at the Accaribo plantation in Suriname; well, it's a moment frozen in time by an anonymous photographer. I imagine the light was bright, and the camera was probably heavy, and whoever took it wanted to capture that exact moment. You can almost feel the humid air and hear the gentle lapping of the water against the wood. I wonder, what were they thinking about as they posed? Were they self-conscious, excited, or maybe just a little bit bored? Probably all of those things, right? It reminds me of the way painters try to catch a feeling or a thought with a brushstroke, trying to hold onto something that's always moving, always changing. And that's what we all do when we look at art, isn't it? We bring ourselves to it and find something new every time.
