This small vintage photograph captures a group, including the couple Jetten, assembled for a formal portrait. The image has a silvery tone, maybe because of the early photographic paper. I wonder what it was like to stage the photograph. It’s posed and a bit stiff, right? The light is soft, which flattens the composition somewhat. I am not sure where they are. It’s as if the subjects and their architectural setting exist in separate worlds. The sitters are arranged in a conventional manner, with the women seated and the men standing behind them. It's difficult to know the photographer’s intentions. The way they are presented and the conventions employed really tell us a lot about the aesthetics of the time.
