This stained glass composition was made by Theo van Doesburg, though when exactly is unknown. Look at how he’s pushed a limited range of colour so far – such restraint in the palette really shows off the structural composition. He layers the colors together in a kind of dance. See how the thin washes of white, that act as the background, contrast with the solid blocks of blues, yellows and reds. It's like he’s inviting us to consider the very essence of form. Then there are the varying degrees of opacity in the glass, some areas almost totally opaque, others allowing a gentle diffusion of light. Doesburg has this uncanny ability to turn something as rigid as geometry into something sensual, something felt. Van Doesburg's explorations feel aligned with the Bauhaus project, which was happening at the same time. You can see this in the way he combines art, craft, and technology. Anyway, it's just so cool to see artists playing with boundaries, isn't it?
