Ralph Steiner made this silver gelatin print, "Front of Old Ford" sometime in the 20th century, finding abstraction in the everyday. What strikes me here is how Steiner coaxes such a range of tones from a limited palette. The grayscale is rich and subtle. Look how the sun glances off the headlamp, creating a sense of depth. My eye is immediately drawn to the contrast between light and shadow beneath the chassis - the shadow of the wheel spoke against the ground plane. This close-up perspective flattens the object, turning it into a dynamic arrangement of shapes and textures. The interplay of geometric forms, like the circular lamp and spoked wheel, against the rough texture of the vehicle's body, gives the image a unique visual rhythm. It reminds me a little of Charles Sheeler’s precisionist photographs, which also found beauty in industrial subjects. Ultimately, Steiner’s photograph encourages us to see the world with fresh eyes, to find beauty in the mundane, and to embrace the endless possibilities of seeing.
