Editor: Here we have "Saint Thais of Alexandria as a Hermit" a 1644 engraving by Christoffel van Sichem II. The heavy lines and stark contrast give it a really somber feel, almost claustrophobic. I’m struck by the artist's rendering of drapery and the woman's tearful state. What formal elements stand out to you? Curator: The tightly controlled lines and textures are quite compelling. Notice how the artist uses hatching and cross-hatching to build up the tonal range, creating a sense of depth within a limited palette. The composition is primarily organized around the central figure, but also by diagonals running across the picture plane and along the timbers on the wall. The balance is, however, maintained via the figure itself, resting solidly on the base of the image. Are you picking that up too? Editor: I am, yes! And I see the lines now that you point them out, especially those diagonals that give the image its balance, keeping it grounded, which really amplifies her dejection and introspection. Is it also fair to suggest the darkness of the space is what draws you in? Curator: Absolutely. Look closely, and you will notice the figure emerges from this void. She’s illuminated, yet surrounded by these heavy blacks, and by the horizontal thrust of the boards closing her off in space, thus emphasizing confinement. Editor: So the textures, lighting, and lines are designed to evoke a specific mood, working together to reinforce the narrative? Curator: Precisely. Without considering these formal devices, we cannot truly understand the impact or appreciate the skill present in van Sichem’s work. Through the visual, the physical—in this case the use of line, light, shape and composition—meaning becomes perceptible. Editor: I see that so clearly now. Thank you. Focusing on these visual components really unlocked a new way of understanding this print for me.
